Join Us in Honoring Coach Hahn
The late Coach Matt Hahn (1953-2021) always believed that students deserved a chance to take the field and shine regardless of their (dis)ability. This was as true in the classroom as it was in the game. For nearly 40 years, Coach Hahn was a stalwart of Stuyvesant’s Athletics staff as coach of our JV Football team, and JV and Varsity Baseball teams. He also worked in the Stuyvesant Program office for over 20 years.
Confined to a wheelchair since 1979 due to an automobile accident, Coach Hahn served as an inspiration to all those who encountered him with his perseverance, positive attitude, and friendly smile. “Matty,” as he was known among friends and colleagues, was instrumental in bringing changes in New York City to assist those with disabilities who faced discrimination and was even honored for his service to the community by then Mayor Koch.
SHSAA is partnering with LifeWeb 360 to celebrate our fellow Stuy community members that have passed away by sharing stories, photos, and videos honoring them and the impact they’ve had on Our Strong Band. Campaign to Name the Stuyvesant Gymnasium
Join us in honoring Coach Hahn by pledging your support to name the 3rd Floor Gymnasium at Stuyvesant the “Coach Matt Hahn Training Center.” The Alumni Association, in partnership with the School, is aiming to raise $100,000 towards the campaign. Proceeds will go towards refinishing the gymnasium floor and purchasing much needed training equipment for the Stuyvesant Peglegs and Hitmen. Any excess funds will go towards establishing the Stuy Athletics Fund that will supplement the funding the School receives from its PSAL support and sustain the development of our young athletes for many generations to come.
The Alumni Association is currently creating a platform for the Stuyvesant community to honor and celebrate the lives of those alumni, teachers, administrators, and other members of the Stuyvesant family who are no longer with us with stories and photos.
Please share your memories of Coach Hahn in our inaugural posting at: memories.lifeweb360.com/matt-hahn.
